Planning a quilting trip to Illinois? Bernina of Naperville is bursting with creativity, from colorful fabric displays and inspiring quilt samples to specialty threads and Bernina machines. Pair your visit with a class at the Bernina Creative Center for the ultimate quilting adventure.

When I traveled to Illinois for a longarm class at the Bernina Creative Center in Aurora, I knew I couldn’t leave without making a stop at Bernina of Naperville. I’d first discovered the shop through their YouTube channel, where owner Gayle shares approachable tutorials and inspiring project ideas. After seeing the store through her videos, I was excited to experience it in person, and it did not disappoint!

First Impressions
Walking in, the first thing that hit me was color. Everywhere I looked, there were bolts of fabric organized in perfect rainbows, fat quarters stacked neatly, and sample projects showing what those fabrics could become. It felt less like a store and more like a quilter’s playground. I loved how much effort they put into their store displays and design. It was truly inspiring. I was instantly happy!

Quilter Eye Candy Everywhere

Every corner had something that made me stop and stare:
- Sling bags stitched from skull-print Halloween fabric, showing off how novelty designs can shine in everyday projects.
- Fun and quirky prints stacked and ready, just begging to become your next tote, pillow or quilt.
- Bright quilts displayed high on the walls, mixing patchwork and modern color for instant inspiration.
- A cozy sewing nook with an aqua chair and a Bernina machine set up as if it were waiting for one of us! It feels like a spot made for sitting down, pressing the foot pedal, and getting lost in creating.

It was the kind of shop that reminds you why you love this craft, ideas practically jump into your project list whether you planned on them or not. I wonder if the reason I chose my hamburger fabric later on was because I first saw it here?! Crazy how the brain works!
Meeting Bonaparte, the Shop Dog

One of the highlights of my visit? Meeting Bonaparte, the Frenchie shop dog. He’s even cuter in real life than he is on Instagram @mrbernina and he’s pretty adorable there! I didn’t take photos of him because he was chilling in his crate in the back, but someone kindly took me and a few other people back there to see him. It was awesome!

It’s little touches like this that make quilt shops so welcoming. You don’t just stop in to grab thread, you become part of the community. Between the friendly staff, the inspiring displays, and Bonaparte keeping an eye on things, it felt like the kind of place you could spend the whole afternoon.

Thread Heaven

For a thread lover, the displays were irresistible. I spotted Coats Eloflex, which is designed for stretchy seams and serging projects, and Kimono Silk thread, known for its fine strength in piecing and smooth quilting.

Seeing these alongside finished quilts was a good reminder: the right thread can completely change your project’s finish. It made me want to experiment more with specialty threads instead of always reaching for my basics.

I also loved seeing how they displayed Bernina machines, from the past, throughout the shop. So cool!
Why This Stop Mattered
Taking a class at the Bernina Creative Center in Aurora was already a bucket-list experience for me (I’ll share more about that in another post!), but visiting Bernina of Naperville rounded out the trip perfectly.
I left Bernina of Naperville with a fresh dose of inspiration and a few new threads and fabrics to spark future projects. Visits like this are more than shopping trips. They are creative experiences that stay with you long after the fabric is tucked onto your shelves at home. I truly treasure these adventures!
