The Sookie Sews Tape Measure Clutch is as satisfying to make as it is useful. Stitched entirely in the hoop, it’s quick to make, scrap-friendly, and a playful nod to the tape measure that’s sure to catch attention in any sewing crowd.

The first time I saw the Sookie Sews Tape Measure Clutch, I knew I had to make it, it’s just so cute! I love clever designs, and this clutch honors the tape measure, one of my most-used tools. The in-the-hoop embroidery bag felt perfect for taking to classes and meetups, where other makers would appreciate its fun, sewing-inspired style. Honestly? I made it because it made me happy, and it’s even cuter in person.
Why I Loved Making This Clutch
This Tape Measure Clutch looks complicated but actually comes together surprisingly easily. Since it’s an in-the-hoop embroidery project (ITH), the machine does nearly all the work, leaving you with a fully finished bag at the end. BTW, it bears reminding: protect your embroidery machine with a UPS backup (I talk about mine here).

Working with Cork and Scraps
I was thrilled because I finally got to use some cork fabric that I bought what feels like a million years ago and FINALLY USE IT! Turns out, cork is cool…and easy to work with, at least in this project. Also, I used fabric scraps again (like I did here)!! I’m going through a whole thing where I’m trying to make projects with scraps and it’s so satisfying when you do it. Right? I love to reuse, recycle and upcycle things!
Clear Instructions Make the Difference
This was my first Sookie Sews embroidery project and was a big hit as far as I’m concerned. Of course, I’ve done these other Sookie Sews classes, so I knew that I could count on a quality experience. The design included easy to follow instructions that had a lot of photos, which I need. LOL! Seriously, thank you to the designers who write step-by-step patterns that don’t assume we magically “get it.”

Three Sizes of the Clutch
This design came in three sizes:
- Small: 5.02”x 7.06” – Stitches: 6041
- Medium: 6.12”x 10.04” – Stitches: 8184
- Large: 6.76”x 11.23” – Stitches: 9155
I made the smallest one. It was still big enough to hold things that I would actually take along somewhere.
Want to try something a little easier? This basic cat toy is also done completely in the hoop.

Tips for Making Your Own Tape Measure Clutch
If you’re ready to make your own Tape Measure Clutch, here are a few tips that worked for me:
- Use quality stabilizer for structure and crisp stitching. I used OESD Polymesh.
- Press your fabric pieces before you get started. It makes everything easier and produces the best results.
- Experiment with colors. The classic yellow is adorable, but I’m tempted to make a bright pink version next.
- Add texture. Cork, vinyl, or faux leather make great accent fabrics and add a boutique like finish.
The classic yellow tape measure design is spot on, but you could also have fun with the colors, like a rainbow version or the always iconic black and white.
Final Thoughts
Sometimes a project just makes you happy, and this was one of those for me. The Sookie Sews Tape Measure Clutch isn’t just a bag, it’s a fun tribute to classic sewing tools, and I love having it in my collection. Every time I see it, I can’t help but smile.
