How to Use the Cricut Universal Overlay – VIDEO

The new Cricut Universal Overlay is a big change from the previous overlay style.  Not only has the look changed but there will no longer be individual overlays for each cartridge.  This video shows you how to use the new Universal Overlay, including how the digital Universal Overlay works with the Cricut Expression 2.  I hope this helps you!

In this video, I refer to this recent post BBQ Decorated Mason Jar and the Cricut Ceate a Friend overview video.

My Cartridge Checklist APP & Printable Checklist

Don’t forget, you can keep up with all the Cricut cartridges you have or want with the My Cartridge Checklist APP or printable list!  The APP includes EVERY CARTRIDGE so be sure to use your MENU button to sync your APP to make sure it has all the new carts on it!

Have a great weekend!

  2. Thank you so much for explaining the universal overlay. I got mine the other day with the Create a Friend cartridge so this video came at the perfect time.

  3. Thanks so much for the video. It clears up a lot of questions. I was wondering how this was going to work.

  4. Great video demonstration! I will be sending our sometimes cricut challenged scrappers to your site to see it. Thank you, Joy, for always thinking of us.

MCF’s Mimi and now AWF’s Mimi, too. (Gotta give them both equal billing, ya know!)

  5. Thanks for the information..
Now I am not confused if I should get a universal overlay ! Thanks again 🙂

  6. Thanks for the info on the Overlay. Just bought my first little cartridge and overlay but haven’t even taken out of the package yet. This makes it easier to get started. You’re awesome!!!!!

  7. Tks so much for the excellent video! I have a couple more questions. You showed the vampire, selecting the vampire and the clothes. If you cut them out at the same time, will the clothes be proportional to the body of the vampire? Also, I normally work with 8 1/2 x 11 paper and am not able to get to this size with the universal overlay. It only shows 12 x 12 and 12 x 24. Any suggestions? Tks again!!

    1. Hi Cynthia,
It’s been a long time since I created this project and I can’t remember for sure. My best suggestion is to use some test paper, I use Wausau 40411, which shows as a Neenah brand on Amazon. You can usually buy it pretty reasonably by the ream at your local office supply store. I love to have it on hand to check sizing and proper blade depths. I’d try a few test cuts to make sure you get the size you’re looking for. Sorry that I can’t give a better answer! 🙂
