Vinyl Thanksgiving Metal Pumpkin Decor

Here’s a project that shows you the difference using even a little vinyl can make to home decor. I bought this pretty but plain pumpkin a few years ago. Each year we drag it out and sit it on our porch or inside.

This year I noticed how yawn-worthy it really was.  Nothing was particularly wrong with it, it just lacked any personality.  Bring on the vinyl!

Need vinyl?  I like to buy mine from Expressions Vinyl.

I’m using my Silhouette Cameo to cut the vinyl out but you can use any die cut machine.  As a matter of fact, the Cricut is my first love for vinyl.  You can learn everything about using vinyl with your Cricut with my Cricut Vinylology DVD.  It’s in the Store under the Vinylology DVD tab. 😉

I looked at a lot of letter “D’s” until I found the best one for my project.  This font is called “Celeste”.  I think it’s so pretty!

I almost exclusively use a Fiskars Craft Knife for my vinyl work.  With this tool, I’m able to weed the vinyl and cut or trim the backing.

After weeding the vinyl (removing the vinyl you don’t want to use from the vinyl you do want to use) simply cover it with transfer tape and place it on your item.

Check out these vinyl projects!

I love the way it turned out!  Now go spruce up something you have with a little vinyl!

I have tried to use vinyl on metal with no luck. It simply will not stick. Is there some typing of prep work that needs to be done on the metal first? Thank you.

    1. Debbie,
It can be difficult for sure! The best way that I have found to get surfaces to accept vinyl when they don’t want to (besides prepping them with something) is to burnish the vinyl down in small sections as you pull up the backing at the same time. It’s like a tiny push/pull technique. I’ll see if I’ve shown it in a video other than my Cricut vinylology DVD and will post here again with any links. 😉
