This is the first typesetter tray memory frame that I’ve ever decorated.  Creating it was a really cathartic experience for me because this frame is all about me and my Dad.  Since I lost him in 2001, I haven’t spent any time looking at photos of us because the loss was so profound.  So, why now?  Well, it’s beyond time that I look back without sadness and remember the things that made him so special to me.  I won’t go in to all of the reasons this “Never Grow Up”  paper collection by Marion Smith Designs relates to memories of me and my Dad but when I saw it, the connections, even down to the smallest details, were just too strong for me to ignore.

I started with this tray that I picked up at Hobby Lobby.  I cut most of the pieces at 2-1/2″ x 3-1/2″ so they’d fit easily into my tray.  I cut most of the images from this sheet of paper called “Never Never” from the “Never Grow Up”  paper collection by Marion Smith Designs.

I used Craft Glue Dots in the Deskstop Dispenser to adhere the paper to the tray.  I used mini Glue Dots for all the smaller things.  They did a great job of holding those beautiful tiny pink flowers.

All of the embellishments I’m using are from Marion Smith Designs Junque & Gems.  They are soooo nice!

Here’s a close up of all the little tray sections:

I added some pom pom ribbon around the edges of these two panels.  I love that ribbon!  I used it recently in this project too.

I rolled up Craft Glue Dots to a thin size so I could use them to stick the key to the paper on the right.

I’m so glad I took the time to make this.  It was a little like spending the afternoon with my Dad.  It’s now hanging in my craft room…and I really, really love it.

I hope you enjoyed this project!  Be sure to hop over to all of these great blogs!

  2. I love this project!! Everything about it! I am so glad you took that step, my dad passed away in 95 and I have so many awesome memories of him and this would be such a great thing to do for my mom and dad. I lost my mom in 06.

    1. Hi Tina,
Thank you so much for your comment! It was a hard thing for me to do but I’m so happy to be able to look at it. It’s beyond time for me to move forward remembering the joy he brought into my life as opposed to focusing on the loss. You should definitely make one. I know you’ll love it too! Plus…those trays are super cute when they’re all finished. 😉 I kinda want to get going with another one!

  3. Great shadowbox. Love how the bicycle extends into two squares.
Glad that the paper brought back memories that you can relate to you and your dad without getting into explicit pictures. thanks for sharing.

    1. Thank you, Marylouh! I was pretty nervous about cutting that paper and getting it in there just right so that it would line up. I had to redo it twice. LOL! Thank you for your comment. I really appreciate what you said about my project. 🙂

    Joy,
Thank you for sharing a special part of you. My Dad died a little over a year ago…just before I got sick, and it’s been really hard for me for so many reasons. I just wish he were here to hold my hand. Anyhow, I hope, if I get well, I can do the same. You really did an awesome job, and the craftroom is the perfect place for him, where he can watch his daugther’s creativity at work…and smiles.

    1. I’m so sorry for your loss, Blue Rose. I think we have to believe that if there is any way for them to be near us, especially when they are so badly needed, that they are there. Now to lighten things a bit…if my Dad is hanging out in the craft room…I should definitely clean it. LOL! (Hugs and prayers to you.)
