Tips to Keep You Active All Season

The toughest time of the year for me to stay active is the winter.  I just want to crawl under a bunch of blankets and hibernate until the sun hits me in Spring and I feel like crawling back out.  Spring is when I have the most energy and feel like I can achieve anything.  However, thinking that way is what packs on the pounds, makes my knees hurt when I run and isn’t a good plan for maintaining good health.  It’s important to address your heart health every day, even when the weather is less than awesome.  Here are some tips for Staying Active All Season!

Tip #1: Exercise with a Friend – Furry or Regular

Exercising with a friend is a great way to stay motivated.  I often exercise with my husband because we both have similar fitness and weight loss goals.  Another great tip is to work out with your furry friend!  You can do more than just let them go outside.  Join them in their activities!  My dog, Saban, is a great workout buddy.  She gets me to move even when I’d rather stay in.  We play soccer and run around in the yard every day whether it’s wet, snowy, day or night.

Tip #2: Get Good Shoes

I just celebrated my birthday last week and these shoes were a great gift!  My husband and I spent the day together and one of the things we did was get me fitted for a pair of shoes that felt great but also matched the workouts that I’m doing.  Last year, I was mostly working out in the gym with weights.  This year, I’ve started running.  It’s important to get the right shoes for whatever you’re doing.  My last pair of shoes had worn out and I made the mistake of running in them.  My knees and shins really started to hurt.  New shoes equals me getting out and running more!  YAY!  No matter the season, good shoes that fit the activity are very important!

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in women in the United States , and with risk factors steadily on the rise, it has never been more important for women to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Tip #3: Eat Well

Tip #4: Vary Your Route or Exercise

I think one of the best things you can do to stay motivated to exercise is to change where you go and what you do.  Go to a new park, try new exercises or even take your usual route but walk in the opposite direction!  Let your fitness be an adventure!

Tip #5: Go Outside

It’s great to workout in a gym but don’t forget to take the exercise outside once in a while.  There are terrain differences that no treadmill or elliptical can mimic!

Tip #6: Have Fun!

Keeping your heart healthy doesn’t have to be a chore.  Take a cue from kids and go sledding with them, take a walk in the rain, go roller or ice skating, play hopscotch or jump rope.  There are so many great ways to stay fit and have a good time!
