Silhouette Cameo Fall Tree Owl Mantel Decor

Owl in the Family…LOL!

You’re just going to have to come over to see how pretty this is in person.  LOL!  I used my Silhouette Cameo and the print and cut Fall Tree .svg by Lori Whitlock to decorate 5 and 1/2 feet of my mantel.  The only thing that’s not part of Lori’s file is the sentiment which I came up with and typed out in the Silhouette software.  Let’s look at some close up pictures!

The photo I took gave a fisheye look to the photo, but I assure you my mantel is level.  LOL!

I printed the file using my regular printer and now I’m having the Silhouette Cameo cut everything out.  I love this machine!

Say what?! It’s paper?

I had planned to make this whole project out of vinyl but after doing a test cut in paper I changed my mind and did the whole mantel in paper, except for the lettering.  I liked using paper because I could give dimension to the leaves.  I chose to attach everything with Glue Dots so I could easily redo my mantel for Christmas, which is coming faster than a rolling snowball.

This is the paper tree from the right side of my mantel.

I love the shape of the tree, the colors and those gorgeous leaves. You can use the Fall Tree.svg as is or just use the tree, the leaves or the owls. I added more leaves to my trees.  In the photos below, you’ll see that I also enlarged some leaves and made multiples of the owls.

See those peeps in the center?  That’s my family.

Great. Not one of us is looking at the camera.

I chose to duplicate the owl (so easy in the Silhouette software) and change up the colors of the circle of feathers, that way you could tell us all apart.  My kid owls are a tiny bit smaller than the Mom and Dad owl.  Do I look fat in this picture?  They say feathers add 5 pounds on camera.

Created in the Silhouette Designer Edition Software.

It sure looked like vinyl on the mantel, didn’t it?  It’s not!  I used printable adhesive material by Square1.  It’s got a bit of texture and is easily repositionable.  Cool.  Now I can just peel that off too when I’m ready to turn my mantel into Christmas!

I wrote this post while participating on the Lori Whitlock Design Team.

Omg, I seriously love this. I mentioned before I’m really into cutesy owls, and I’m actually trying to get an office done with some owl decor and paint a swirly tree like this on one wall or do a big vinyl mural. So awesome! I really admire your craftiness, Joy!

  7. I want a Cameo so bad, but I can’t afford it:-( I’m so tired of the inexact cuts from my Cricut and being tied down to cartridges. Do you think the price for a Cameo will go down at all anytime soon?

    1. AnnaCM,
When I pre-ordered my Cameo it was $299 but now I’m seeing it at different places for around $269. I can only guess at their pricing but I wouldn’t think that the Silhouette Cameo would go any lower than about $249-259 at the most. I’m not sure it will go that low but am wondering if they might put a sale on for Christmas or something? That’s probably up to the individual stores though. I am guessing that the retailers have a price (MSRP) that is set by Silhouette that they are not allowed to go below. However, you might keep an eye out for stores who offer coupons or other package deals if you purchase the Silhouette from them. I got my Silhouette Cameo from Expressions Vinyl and (this was months ago) at the time they were offering like…$60 worth of vinyl…or something like that with a Cameo preorder. They now sell it for less than I paid and they often have coupons. I’m not sure if you can use the coupons on the Silhouette Cameo but you might give it a try. If you look at the other 12″ die cutting machines on the market I think you’ll find that the Cameo is right in line with the other machines regarding price. The Silhouette SD (now discontinued but still for sale at many places) kept it’s almost $250 price until the very end. I did buy one during the spring for about $170 but was shocked to find that great deal on it. The SD was available for years and held its price of approx $250 for most of its sales cycle. So, my guess about the Cameo dropping too much in price? I’d have to say…no lower than about $250 and that’s probably lower than it will actually go.
I hope that helps…even though it was just my best guess. 🙂

  8. In your opinion what machine do you like the best and why, the cricut expression or silhouette cameo? Also your thoughts on the cricut expression and the cricut expression 2? Love your blog by the way. I always check it out on a daily bases to see if you post anything new.

    1. Hi Kath,
It’s very difficult for me to make a choice between the Cricut Expression and the Silhouette Cameo because they are so different. At the moment, I’m enjoying the Silhouette Cameo the most because it’s new to me and I feel like it gives me more options to create. I like being able to import .svg files or create something that’s all my own without having to use a cartridge and choosing from whatever it has available. That being said, it’s also nice to pop in a cartridge and not have to make so many decisions. I don’t mean that in a disparaging way. The Cricut can certainly be a handful on its own and I feel like there are plenty of creative options with that machine but you do have to work from what the cartridges offer, even when manipulating simple shapes. So, I think the answer to your question about which one I like best, the Cricut Expression or the Silhouette Cameo comes down to a single decision…would I rather work with a cartridge that day or use .svg’s that I’ve imported/downloaded? Honestly, that changes by the day. I would never want to dissuade anyone from trying the Silhouette, but if a person is really resistant to learning a new software program or doesn’t really like using the computer I’d suggest they use a Cricut. I wish I could give you a more definitive answer but I think it comes down to deciding how a person prefers to craft…using the computer or cartridge based. I will say if someone is taking the time to learn to use the Cricut Craft Room, they could definitely learn the Silhouette software if they were interested in doing so. How do I choose which machine to use? It just depends on which image/artwork/project has inspired me that day. 😉

Now your second question is much easier for me. 😉 I think the Cricut Expression 2 is a better made machine than the Cricut Expression. Why? When I got my very first Cricut Expression (the white one I later painted purple) it was a solidly made machine. I never had a moment of trouble from it. Later, I got a red Cricut Expression and within one year (of almost daily use) it stopped cutting well even when I put in new blades AND even when I got a new housing. I had to get a new housing because the plastic one that came with that machine cracked. Once they started substituting plastic for things that used to be metal that machine had problems. Plenty of people did not experience those problems, but lots of other people shared my experience with their own machines. When I pick up my first (white) Cricut Expression and then my red one, I can feel a difference in the heft of the machine. So far the CE2 has done a great job cutting. I like that you can tell where things will cut by using the screen. I think the little mat guides on the machine are a very nice addition; they keep you from sticking in your mat all crazy. I don’t like that you have to lean over your machine or sit right on top of it to tap the screen. If that screen could be removed and handheld it would be fantastic. I think the CE2 is a more solidly built machine and it has performed well since I bought it during its HSN debut. So, I can say thumbs up to the CE2 over the regular Expression.

Again, these are just my opinions based on my own experiences with the machines. I hope I answered your questions…at least a little! 😉
Thank you for coming to my blog!

Joy, I’m thinking all you have to do soon is cut out some winter/Santa hats for your owls, take the leaves off the trees, and add some snowflakes.. Voila! Winter scene, but you get to keep the adorable owls in your likeness. 😉

Thanks for taking the time to answer blog comment questions – what you answered to Kath really helped me.
