Breakfast over the summer got really lax.  I mean sometimes the boys would eat at 8am or 11am … or later … and never at the same time.  You know how it goes with teenagers, right?  Well, for us school has been back in for a month and if there’s not something easy for them to grab, they’ll try to slip out without breakfast.   I think that having fuel for school is super important because it gets you prepared for the day and feeling good!  So, I started making sure to keep things on hand that either they or I can make them fast. Plus, with a lazy susan doubling as a chalkboard, I can leave them a note too!

How to Make a DIY Chalkboard Lazy Susan

I bought a lazy susan at IKEA years ago.  I just had to have it and then I rarely ever used it.  I didn’t like the light wood but I couldn’t decide what I wanted to do with it.  I asked my husband to sand off the top coat and then I let it sit in my craft room for two years.  Until now!

This project is super simple but there are a few things you must do to make it turn out well.  First, sanding the top coat off of the lazy susan is important.  That helps the paint adhere to the wood well.  Next, cover it with a coat of chalkboard paint and let it dry for an hour.  Add a second coat of chalkboard paint and let it dry for at least 12 hours.

Don’t miss this step!  You have to “season” the chalkboard.  That just means that you need to cover the whole board in chalk.  My tip to you is to rough up your chalk using a nail file, sandpaper or on the sidewalk first.  I had a brand new piece of chalk.  I think they have a coating on them when they’re new.  Whatever it is, it prohibits the chalk from being able to really cover the chalkboard.  So, rough that chalk up like it just took your last breakfast sandwich.

Now clean the chalk off using a napkin or paper towel.  I’m using a cloth towel because it was handy.

Now you can write your message and change it up for snack time too!  You can even remind them to take in their book report or clean their room…or just a nice “hello” message works too.  LOL!

Yep…one of the boys just came in and ate one.  Score!  Keeping these foods on hand sure makes back to school a lot simpler!

  1. Love the chalkboard lazy suzan! What a great way to remind the kids to eat breakfast or simply say hi. Thanks for sharing this great tutorial! #client

  2. Quick question about the seasoning. I will only write on the board with liquid chalk and want the board to be largely “pristine”, i.e. really black. Is there another point to seasoning other than it makes it easier to write on it with regular chalk?
